Last May, a Res Artis delegation participated in the entire program of the Dak’Art, the Biennial of African Contemporary Art. Ten Res Artis member organisations offered 11 fully-funded residencies as biennial prizes. The awards were presented to the African artists during a public presentation of the Res Artis Network.

The Res Artis African Residencies newsletter features will continue next month with an article from the Albers Foundation in the United States, who hosted Astou Diop from Senegal last year.

Making applications directly to residencies is one of many ways that residencies choose their artists. Many residency programs have developed specific cooperations with municipalities and residencies in other countries.

Akademie Schloss Solitude has developed several such programs with different partners in Eastern Europe, one example being an exchange in Warsaw with the a-i-r laboratory at Ujazdowski Castle. Every year, two artists from Warsaw are invited to Akademie Schloss Solitude for three months. In exchange, the corresponding number of artists (Solitude fellows) are invited to spend several month-long stays in Warsaw. At the end of each residency, the projects developed during that time are presented to the public.

The Akademie has initiated similar exchange programs for visual and new media artists with the Galeria Noua in Bucharest, Romania and for writers with the József Attila Circle and Collegium Budapest in Hungary.

Dutch artist Isabelle Smeets was artist in residence at the Djerassi Resident Artists Program in California, USA.

With eight other artists from around the world, she enjoyed the 250 hectare private ground with 48 artworks, from September until October, 2006

At first the artists were strangers, but after a presentation of each person’s work and the daily shared meals and events, the artists quickly felt quite connected.
These everyday and continued connections brought about a unique level of intimacy among the group. For Smeets, these exceptional interactions with her fellow artists, the ongoing discussions and communications taking place in a remote location, brought a new dimension to her work.

As a result of the residency, Smeets was invited to design the set for a dance created by Jorge Domínguez for the Compañía Jorge Domínguez in Mexico. Also, the director of the Albertina Museum in Vienna came to visit the studios and invited Smeets to create a permanent work in the museum.
