Last May, a Res Artis delegation participated in the entire program of the Dak’Art, the Biennial of African Contemporary Art. Ten Res Artis member organisations offered 11 fully-funded residencies as biennial prizes. The awards were presented to the African artists during a public presentation of the Res Artis Network.<br>
<br>
In 2007, these residencies will take place, the African artists will travel throughout the world, hosted by the various organizations. Each newsletter this year will feature a residency and their resident artist. <br>

Kultuuri Kauppila li hosted Senegalese artist Cheikhou Ba in the north...<br>
<br>
After four weeks of residency the studio is filled with art works. Tens of pastel paintings illustrating people – melancholic but peaceful – have gotten to their company bicycle tyres. Smiling happy as a child or the naivistic figures of the paintings Cheikhou Ba explains how he began to cycle in Ii. The neighbourhood was wondering who is this lonely man with the bike cycling zig-zag on the streets. Inspired by the townspeople Cheikhou Ba created little plastic men riding a wire bike. The story behind the sculptures reaches all the way to the plastic bags of the local grocery. <br>

The three home artists of KulttuuriKauppila love the bright colours and individuality of Cheikohou Ba’s works, but more that that they are inspired by his way of creating art from everyday material. In Africa everyone is artist. And everything can be material for art, everywhere. This will be seen in the children’s environment art camp guided by the home artist bearing in heart Cheikhou Ba’s sincerity towards nature and dreams. <br>

KulttuuriKauppila is a dream of three artists, a dream of a new kind of an art home. <br>
<br>
KulttuuriKauppila organizes exhibitions courses and seminars on contemporary topics, supports international activities especially through the artist exchange, but also by organizing international symposiums, takes part on regional, national and global art programmes and develops through networking the interaction between cultures.<br>

<STRONG>From Cheikhou BA</STRONG><br>
<br>
What for an artist is an artist who does not travel?<br>
<br>
Over and above the spiritual journey, which indisputably more than anything else, nourishes our creative capacities, the physical journey leads us from a region or country to another and enriches our creative universe...in this same sense Descartes says that one must read the book of the world...by travelling.<br>
<br>
I'll never stop repeating to myself and others, that I learned more in ten days in Ottawa than in four years at the Beaux Arts. Throughout our journeys, barriers and frontiers are broken, cultures and experiences merge into each other and the artist reemerges even stronger and richer than before. This is my seventh year of art practice after an artistic formation of four years at the Beaux Art in Dakar. And this is not my first experience abroad...<br>
<br>
After being to Canada, Spain, France, the United States, China and Switzerland, I now find myself in a residency in Finland, more precisely at the association Kultuuri Kaupilla in Ii.<br>
<br>
Every place can be inspiring. The society and the weather as well.<br>
<br>
No matter what emerges from the art work in itself, the artist will always be marked by its elements.<br>
<br>
My stay in Ii is profoundly marked by solitude, the silence of nature and trees and the rivers that flow in front of my window...but also by the bicycles and means of locomotion used by pupils, students and adults for their short distances. It was not at all surprising to see how these bicycles and wheel elements found their way into my artistic work. If I had to be more reflective I would say that one may go back to my childhood and find parallelisms with the fact that I never had a bicycle when I was a kid...?<br>
<br>
Psychology would definitely never neglect such a fact in this sense. In any way I'm sure that at any point in time during the execution of my work, I did find myself unconsciously in the kingdom of my childhood, at the verge of drawing bicycles of all sorts and most of all construct them with very simple materials ( wire and plastic bags). And now the question is: would I have reacted this way if I ever had a bicycle when I was a kid...? I don't think so...and I had to wait till I came to Ii to realise this.<br>

In any case I am glad I never had a bicycle when I was a kid, since I could start practising sculpture at a very early stage through the construction of bikes and small cars made of cardboard and wire...In Africa children unconsciously start sculpting at a very young age.<br>

<STRONG>About Cheikhou BA</STRONG><br>
<br>
Born in 1971 in Senegal, Cheikhou BA graduated from the National School of Fine Arts of Dakar. He is an art teacher in a school in Dakar.<br>
<br>
Cheikhou uses all sorts of material and exploits a variety of media. A painter, a sculptor and a drawer, he is comfortable with both the paintbrush and the chisel. In both sculpture and painting his work is characterized by recurrences. The recurrence of an image, an object, a pictorial act which are never exactly the same to provoke comparison and induce difference and movement. “Why?” presented at Dak’Art 2006 is the reconstitution of two rooms, one in black and white and the other one in colors. The room’s walls are covered with drawings and paintings. They carry some sculptures. Through his installation, the artist tries to depict the oppositions that give a meaning to life: the visible versus the invisible, the understood versus the misunderstood, hope versus despair, the apprehended versus the misapprehended.<br>
