After Culture Call for Submissions<br>
<br>
After Culture is a journal in anthropology, cultural studies, sociology,<br>
geography, and interdisciplinary studies of culture, broadly construed.<br>
After Culture?s mandate is to promote experimental forms of academic<br>
scholarship, both in content and form, as well as to work with scholars<br>
on developing new modes of scholarly presentation. After Culture<br>
provides anthropologists, and other scholars concerned with ?culture?  and<br>
its vagaries, with a space in which to celebrate and reconceive the  study<br>
of culture and its possibilities. The name of the journal serves  as an<br>
invitation to consider what comes next, what futures await<br>
anthropology and the study of culture, and how these futures might be<br>
articulated and enacted. After Culture is thus a space for the thinking<br>
and rethinking of futures, of emergences and resurgences.<br>
<br>
After Culture is edited by an international editorial collective of<br>
graduate students in anthropology and cultural studies; with the support<br>
of faculty from diverse institutions and fields, the editorial<br>
collective solicits manuscripts, reviews articles, arranges issues for<br>
publication, and hosts occasional workshops. Such an arrangement of<br>
interdisciplinary and international interests allows After Culture to<br>
constantly evolve; similarly, the editorial collective accepts new<br>
members on a rolling basis, allowing for innovative ideas and approaches.<br>
<br>
As an online journal, we are able to include scholarly work that moves<br>
beyond the material boundaries of print journals, and as such, we hope  to<br>
expand academic forms of representation and work. After Culture is<br>
currently interested in the following kinds of scholarly contributions:<br>
<br>
Multimedia essays, which integrally include audio or visual media in<br>
addition to the text of the essay; these multimedia additions may  include<br>
soundscapes, samples of music and interviews, samples of video,  or brief<br>
ethnographic documentary. Other multimedia forms are also  possible, and<br>
can be discussed with the managing editors.<br>

Photo essays that employ Flash slideshows. A simple version of this  style<br>
of presentation can be found here:<br>

photos or text) could be developed.<br>
<br>
Literature review essays that address contemporary concerns in<br>
anthropology, or which compile and discuss anthropological literatures<br>
rarely translated into English. In the case of the former, we are<br>
especially interested in theoretically-<wbr>driven literature reviews that<br>
address emerging concerns in anthropological research, as well as  reviews<br>
that critically engage with scholarship that has renewed<br>
relevance due to trends in contemporary anthropology. In the case of the<br>
latter form of literature review, we are especially interested in  reviews<br>
of non-U.S. anthropological traditions, both those that appear  primarily<br>
in a language other than English, and traditions which appear  in English,<br>
but that are circumscribed in their distribution.<br>

In addition to interviews, it is also possible to publish<br>
?conversations? between colleagues on a theme or topic of mutual<br>
expertise, an example being the conversation between Don Brenneis and<br>
Steven Feld in American Ethnologist 31.4 (although, online, it could<br>
include sound).<br>

In addition, we are interested in working closely with graduate<br>
students, junior faculty, and international scholars to prepare article<br>
manuscripts for publication. Our peer-review process is intended to work<br>
quickly and generatively, and to help scholars move through the<br>
peer-review process with transparency while maintaining rigorous, blind<br>
review.<br>

The editorial structure of the journal is comprised of an Editorial  Board made up of graduate students who serve renewable three-year terms  and who adopt the majority of the peer-review responsibilities as well  as the formulation of editorial policies. The Editorial Advisory Board  is comprised of established scholars and assists with the peer-review process and advises the Editorial Board on policy. Editorial AdvisoryBoard members are appointed to renewable five-year terms. Graduate students who have served on the Editorial Board, upon completion of  their graduate studies, are invited to matriculate to the Editorial  Advisory Board. These two arms are collectively referred to as the  Editorial Collective, and ideally will comprise 30-40 individuals from  across disciplines, locales, and professional status.<br>
