<STRONG>Boston</STRONG><br>
First, I would like to thank everyone who attended our regional meeting in Boston, held in April in conjunction with the <a href="http://www.transculturalexchange.org/"> TransCultural Exchange</a> meeting. There is not enough that can be said for Mary Sherman’s ability to organize this spectacular event, which featured residencies, curators, critics and grant makers from more than 60 nations engaged in lively discussions on the various international opportunities available in the arts. This was the second biannual meeting and we were very excited to have been a part of it. We are looking forward to some innovative collaborating for the 2011 meeting.<br><br>In order to keep the momentum going, we are happy to announce dates for a couple of other opportunities coming up for us to meet face to face. While we are in the process of the developing a website that allows for more online social networking, we all know the great value of engaging in personal exchanges. These are often
much more invigorating and dynamic interactions that often lead to the development new collaborative projects and operating strategies. <br>
<br>
<STRONG>Korea</STRONG><br>
Please join us in Korea this October, from the 29th through the 31st, for a Res Artis conference to be hosted by the Gyeonggi Creation Center. This new institution will be celebrating the opening of its new residency facilities. This new complex will feature a variety of programs for artists, researchers, curators, and educators. We are currently developing a program for this conference and will send you more details by the end of May.<br>
<br>
<STRONG>Poland</STRONG><br>
We are also in the process of programming an Eastern and Central European regional meeting to be held on November 16th through the 19th and will be hosted by the Centre for Contemporary Art (www.csw.art.pl) at Ujazdowski Castle in Warsaw, Poland. It will be an opportunity to address current issue relevant to the region and will feature a workshop on training and support for emerging residencies. The regional meeting will also coincide with the celebration of the 20th anniversary of collaboration between the Centre for Contemporary Art at Ujazdowski Castle and Akademie Schloss Solitude.<br>

We will continue to make the details of these meetings available as the programs are finalized.<br>

Res Artis will once again award fully funded residencies, awards offered directly to young artists participating in the <a href="http://www.bjcem.org/en/news/dett_860.htm">BJCEM Biennale</a> in Skopje Macedonia, from the 3-13 September 2009. Nine Res Artis member organisations, from Europe, the States and Asia will invite the artist of their choice for a residency at their organisation. <br>
<br>
The organisations:<br>
<ul><li><a href="http://www.air-krems.at/">Air-Krems</a> with five studio apartments, space for events and work-shops, the Factory - the in-house exhibition space of the neighbouring Kunsthalle Krems - and an average of between 40 to 50 international scholarship recipients per year, AIR Krems is one of the largest of its kind in Austria</li>
<li><a href="http://www.airantwerpen.be/">Antwerpen Artist in Residence</a> in Belgium, a breeding ground for contemporary art and new media in a former lockman's residence</li>
<li><a href="http://www.fransmasereelcentrum.be/">Frans Masereel Centrum</a>, also in Belgium, a meeting point for graphic artists and printmakers</li>
<li><a href="http://www.ufafabrik.de/">ufaFabrik Berlin International Cultural Center</a> in Germany, developing independent performing and interdisciplinary artist groups in the former UFA-movie factory</li>
<li><a href="http://www.thamgidi.org/">Thamgidi Studio Foundation</a> in the Netherlands, promoting the reciprocity of cultures by supporting artist exchanges within Africa and aritsts in the Diaspora</li>
<li><a href="http://www.freedimensional.org/">freeDimensional</a> in the United States, an international network that advances social justice by hosting activists in art spaces and using cultural resources to strengthen their work. In collaboration with the <a href="http://www.fluxfactory.org/">Flux Factory</a>, an organisation supporting innovative and collaborative works, in dialogue with the physical, social and cultural space in New York City</li>
<li><a href="http://www.faap.br/residenciaartistica/">Fundação Armando Alvares Penteado</a> in Brazil, a working space for artists active in the arts, communication or in architecture</li>
<li><a href="http://www.beijingstudiocenter.org/">Beijing Studio Center</a> in China, an international residency program to foster exchange and professional growth, offering production facilities and expertise</li>
<li><a href="http://www.youkobo.co.jp/">Youkobo Art Space</a> in Japan, a quiet micro art community providing a platform for diverse modes of artistic activity and communication</li></ul>

Our last conference, Artists in Dialogue, Transforming Communities, held in Amsterdam was a great success. We had over 120 attendees and guests with us as we heard many inspirational speakers, met in smaller workshop groups, elected three new board-members, welcomed the past Res Artis presidents and explored many places in Amsterdam and Arnhem.<br>

<ul><li><b>Where is it?</b><br><br>Hovinkartano Art Exhibition Centre is situated in the south of Finland in Hameenlinna, 130 km from our capital Helsinki, in old manor surroundings.</li><br>
<li><b>What is it?</b><br><br>Hovinkartano has yearly summer art exhibitions in six different old manor buildings. Our purpose is to introduce professional Finnish´and foreign artists´ works in our various galleries and surroundings, to organize workshops, to rent out our residence to artists/artist groups and our aim is also to make our premises available to various cultural events (concerts, theatre, lectures etc.). Our plan is to increase the activities in Hovinkartano to many areas of culture: visual arts, theatre, music - we are always open to new ideas...We are also running a restaurant to be able to serve groups/artist in residence and of course the daily visitors to our Art Exhibition Centre. Our residence welcomes also artist´s family members.</li><br>
<li><b>Whats going on now?</b><br><br>At the moment we are busy organizing our summer art exhibitions, our Artists´Symposium 2009 due at the end of May, and all the events that we will have in course of the summer months. This year for the first time we will have summer theatre outside performances, too. Except for the exhibitions and theatre our summer program will consist of concerts, theme evenings around special foods and drinks and meetings. We also do family events on request. We are starting to get more and more inquiries about the residence. We are not fully booked yet, so if someone is interested we still take reservations to a certain extend.</li><br>

<ul><li><b>Where is it?</b><br><br>Digital Artists in Residency Forja ArteContemporáneo is sited in a street level space in a busy publicity agency in the city centre of Valencia.</li><br>
<li><b>What is it?</b><br><br>The artists-in-residence program enables international artists to come to Valencia to develop their artistic process with an emphasis on new media and use the space and equipment to further experiment with technology. The residency offers one to two month access from 9am to 8pm from Monday to Friday to a computer station, with broadband Internet and software. The residency is open as well to international curators with an interest in new media.</li><br>
<li><b>Whats going on now?</b><br><br>Our next resident is Gustavo Darío López, a curator and jury of contemporary art from Bahía Blanca, Argentina. Since 1982 Gustavo Darío López works as editor of the projects Senda y VOX arte + literatura, with more that 100 magazines and books published. He has produced as well programs and documentaries for television and digital magazines and has obtained grants to study cultural management. He develops cultural projects in different cities of Argentina and Brazil. Gustavo Darío López will be in residency in Forja ArteContemporáneo from the 11 to the 26th of May. He will be available for interviews and tutorials during his stay.</li><br>
