call for applications
www.cjsm.vlaanderen.be/fransmasereelcentrum

The FMC offers space for the development of graphic projects based on
artistic production, research or based on an artistic/theoretical
discourse. Eligible are professional artists, designers, theoreticians,
critics and researchers who can present a consistent curriculum or a
portfolio with relevance to the FMC as a graphic competence centre, or
with added value for the current visual arts domain.

Type A : General residency

A residency of a minimum of four to a maximum of six weeks offers
professional artists or graphic designers the opportunity to look more
closely at different graphic techniques and/or explore new graphic
applications in their own artistic practice. The FMC makes two technical
staff members available, and prior knowledge of the graphic medium is not
required.

PROCEDURE

The FMC works with a selection committee to guarantee objectivity, quality
and diversity. This committee takes responsibility for the selection of
the residents for the three different forms of residence offered by the
FMC. Selection is based on a number of criteria and takes place three
weeks after the final submission date of the application files at a closed
meeting. Selected candidates are notified shortly thereafter. Chosen
candidates receive brief details as a guide to possible participation in a
following selection stage.

one´s own (artistic) practice and to the working of the FMC. It represents
added value for both parties and for current art circles.

general oeuvre.
-The selection committee uses conceptual and formal criteria, and
evaluates the conformity of the application with the oeuvre.

Type B : Research-oriented residency

Residency of two months for researchers, artists and graphic designers for
the purposes of researching the graphic medium. The residency fits in the
frame work of the FMC as knowledge-centre and falls under the Expert
Cluster* and good knowledge of the medium is a requirement. The residency
closes with a public event in the form of a discussion.
The FMC offers residency with the purposes of gathering expertise in the
graphic medium from the scientific or artistic fields of study. The course
of the research gives researchers the opportunity to refine already
acquired information or generate new ideas on current processes. The
infrastructure with graphic workshops and documentation centre as well as
the collection, the archives and international network that the FMC makes
available form an ideal laboratory for research-oriented residencies. The
research results are given a place in the Expertise Cluster and contribute
to the development of this platform for researchers in the graphic medium.
The residency ends with a public event at which the focus is on dialogue
with the public, experts and artists.
