*Die Teilnehmer an diesem Gespräch sprechen aus ihren unterschiedlichen
Perspektiven darüber, wie Bildsprachen das öffentliche Gesicht während
der Proteste beeinflusst bzw. wie sie sich im Lauf des Arabischen
Frühlings gewandelt haben. Während der Graffiti-Writer, Mitbetreiber der
Common Ground Gallery in Berlin und Verleger Don Karl seine Recherche
zur Publikation Arabic Graffiti (From Here To Fame, 2011) vorstellt,
wird der Künstler und Aktivist Ganzeer über seine Aktionen in Kairo
berichten. Fred Meier-Menzel und Mikala Hyldig Dal stellen das
Rechercheprojekt Campaigning Cairo vor, das sich mit den Wahlkampagnen
in Ägypten 2011 beschäftigt und die zugrunde liegenden politischen und
ästhetischen Repräsentationsstrategien hinterfragt.

/Contributing individual perspectives, the participants in this
discussion reflect on the ways in which visual languages have influenced
the public appearance of the protests while also transforming themselves
over the course of the Arab Spring. Don Karl, a graffiti writer,
co-organiser of the Common Ground Gallery in Berlin and publisher, will
present the research from his publication Arabic Graffiti (From Here To
Fame, 2011) and artist and activist Ganzeer will talk about his
activities in Cairo. Fred Meier-Menzel and Mikala Hyldig Dal will
introduce the research project Campaigning Cairo, which addresses the
2011 election campaign in Egypt by questioning the underlying political
and aesthetic strategies of representation./*

*Das Alexandria Streets Project ist ein Radiokunstprojekt über die
ägyptische Stadt Alexandria. Komponiert aus Interviews, Tondokumenten
und Aufzeichnungen aus Feldstudien, eine akustische Karte der Stadt ist
entstanden, die Vergangenheit, Gegenwart und Zukunft, persönliche
Erinnerungen an das Revolutionsjahr 2011, Träume und Pläne miteinander
verbindet und die Psychogeografie Alexandrias erforscht. Im Gespräch mit
Omar Hatem, Mitgründer des ägyptischen Online-Radios Radio Tram und
lokaler Partner des Projekts, erzählen die Kuratorinnen Berit Schuck und
Julia Tieke von ihren Recherchen und der Produktion vor Ort. Im
Anschluss wird die von Eps51 als „Sonic Map“ angelegte Website
präsentiert, auf der alle Soundfiles auf Arabisch und Englisch

/The Alexandria Streets Project is a radio art project about the
Egyptian city Alexandria. Composed from interviews, sound documents and
field recordings, it creates an acoustic map of the city. The piece
explores the psycho-geography of Alexandria by connecting past, present
and future as well as personal memories from the revolutionary year of
2011 with dreams and plans. In discussion with Omar Hatem, who
co-founded the Egyptian online radio Radio Tram and is a local partner
of the project, the curators Berit Schuck and Julia Tieke will talk
about the research and production process in Alexandria. Subsequently, a
website will be presented that was designed by Eps51 as a “sonic map”

*Der Vortrag beschäftigt sich mit den neuen visuellen Genres und
Strategien des politischen und sozialen Widerstands, denen arabische
Typografie und Schrift im vergangenen Jahrzehnt eine konkrete Form
gegeben haben. Präsentiert wird ein breites Spektrum von Projekten aus
der gesamten arabischen Welt, von Typografie im Printbereich bis zu
Street Art und anderen Schriftzügen im öffentlichen Raum. Huda
Smitshuijzen-AbiFares ist Gründerin und Leiterin der Khatt Foundation,
einer seit 2004 existierenden Kulturstiftung/Forschungszentrum für die
sich im Mittleren Osten, Nordafrika sowie deren Diasporas entwickelnde
Design- und Typografiekulturen (www.khtt.net).

/The talk will address the new visual genres and strategies of political
and social resistance that Arabic typography and lettering have embodied
over the past decade, presenting a wide range of projects from print
typography, to street art and lettering in public space from across the

*In diesem Gespräch betrachten die Künstlerin und Aktivistin Sandra
Hetzl und die Journalistin Gabriela M. Keller den Umgang mit Bild und
Schrift in den Formen der Berichterstattung und des Widerstands, die
sich parallel zur Syrischen Revolution entwickelt haben. Dabei geht es
nicht nur um Bürgerjournalismus, um Bilder, die zu Ikonen geworden sind
und als Zitate durch den Cyberspace hallen, sondern auch um die
kollektiven Aktionen der Kleinstadt Kafranbel. Syrische Protagonisten
werden per Skype über ihre Aktivitäten sprechen, an dieser Stelle jedoch
zu ihrem Schutz nicht namentlich genannt.

/In this discussion, artist and activist Sandra Hetzl and journalist
Gabriela M. Keller reflect on the roles of image and text both with
regards to news reporting as well as to the resistance that developed in
parallel to the Syrian Revolution. This is not only about citizen
journalism or the images that have become oft-quoted icons echoing
through cyberspace, but also about the collective activities of the town
Kafranbel. While Syrian protagonists will talk about their activities
via Skype, they remain anonymous for safety reasons./

*Die Anzahl arabischer Computer-Schriften war lange Zeit sehr begrenzt.
Erst seit der Entwicklung neuer digitaler Technologien wie Open Type
begannen Designer, wie Nadine Chahine und Pascal Zoghbi, die steigende
Nachfrage nach neuen arabischen Schriften zu stillen indem sie
zahlreiche Corporate Typefaces für Unternehmen oder als Pendant für
lateinische Schriften entwickelten. Nadine Chahine arbeitet in Bad
Homburg für Linotype und gestaltete in den letzten Jahren Schriften wie
Koufiya, Frutiger Arabic, Helvetica Arabic und viele mehr. Pascal Zoghbi
führt in Libanon sein eigenes Type-Design-Label 29arabicletters und
entwickelt Schriften für Kunden wie Google Android oder das Arab Museum
of Modern Art in Doha. Das Berliner Grafik-Studio Eps51 hat sich unter
anderem auf bilinguales Design mit arabischer und lateinischer Schrift
spezialisiert. Um diese besondere Herausforderung soll es in dem
Gespräch vor allem gehen: es gilt nicht nur mit zwei Sprachen zu
gestalten, sondern zwei komplett unterschiedliche Schriftsysteme mit
verschiedenen optischen Eigenschaften und entgegengesetzten Schreib- und
Leserichtungen zusammenzubringen.

//For a long time the number of Arabic computer fonts was very limited.
It was only with the development of new digital technologies such as
Open Type that designers such as Nadine Chahine and Pascal Zoghbi began
to satisfy the growing demand for new Arabic fonts by developing
numerous corporate typefaces for different companies or as equivalent
for Latin fonts. Nadine Chahine works for Linotype in Bad Homburg where
she has developed fonts such as Koufiya, Frutiger Arabic, Helvetica
Arabic and many more. With 29arabicletters, Pascal Zoghbi directs his
own type design label in Lebanon, developing fonts for clients such as
Google Android or the Arab Museum of Modern Art in Doha. The Berlin
graphic studio Eps51 has specialised among other things in bilingual
design using Arabic and Latin scripts. The discussion will mainly focus
on this particular challenge: besides having to design for different
languages, it is also about integrating two completely different
