The SPACES project, final event (presentations, talks, city tours)

Following the research on the self-organized art scenes in the post- 
Soviet Europe, which took place within the framework of the  
international project SPACES during last three years, the Slobodne  
veze//Loose Associations are hosting a public talk with the curators  
from the four cities mentioned above. The event is taking place on  
Monday 03/11/ 2014 at the SCCA Zagreb, starting at 7pm.

The SPACES project was a three-year attempt to link the new artistic  
and activist initiatives in the four post-Soviet republics, which had  
several objectives: strengthening the independent cultural actors and  
supporting their work through the implementation of a number of  
context specific projects in the urban (public) space. A great deal of  
their activities has been related to the recent urban struggles  
against the appropriation of what used to be a common space by the  
private capital in conjuction with the city or state neo-liberal  
policies. When addressing the Soviet context and its heritage, the  
public space concept needs to be re-examined.

“The notion of the public sphere, as elaborated in western European  
and Anglo-American academic discourses, has been largely associated  
with the emergence of liberalism and civil society. Even those  
theories that critique Jürgen Habermas’s notion of the public sphere  
for its ignorance of the politics of exclusion and inclusion,  
nevertheless rely on the notion of the public sphere as an arena in  
which identity finds representation: the public sphere here is  
constituted as a battleground for recognition and representation of  
identities within the already established structures of  
legitimization. Developed in radically different circumstances from  
those of Western Europe and North America, in countries where state  
socialism prevailed, the notion of the public sphere calls for a  
different conception and identification with the state.” (Angela

In the framework of Zagreb meeting the emphasis will be on examining  
the status of the (in)dependent cultural associations “from self- 
organization to institutionalization”, their achievements and  
limitations, as well as the impact of the alternative education (self- 
knowledge) on the recent artistic practices in the respective  
countries. It will also introduce three residential programs: in  
Tbilisi (Geo Air residency program), Yerevan (NEST Residency Program)  
and Chisinau (CHIOSC residency program). The aim of this meeting is to  
exchange knowledge and to connect Zagreb cultural workers and those  
from the two Caucasian republics of Armenia and Georgia as well as  
Ukraine and Moldova.

As part of the program, two publications developed during the SPACES  
project will be presented:

- SPACES: Cultural Public Sphere in Armenia, Georgia, Ukraine and  
Moldova (Edited by Nataša Bodrožić & Nini Palavandishvili, Verlag  
Bibliothek der Provinz, 2014)

- Imagining the PUBLIC: Independent Cultural Scenes in Armenia,  
Georgia, Ukraine and Moldova (Edited by Nataša Bodrožić in  
cooperation with Kateryna Botanova, Nini Palavandishvili, Nora  
Galfayan, Vladimir Us, SPACES, 2014)

The Zagreb program guests: Taguhi Torosyan, Nvard Yerkanian,  
Utopiana.am / NEST- Yerevan / Armenia Nini Palavandishvili, Sophia  
Lapiashvili, GeoAIR- Tbilisi / Georgia Anna Pohribna Foundation Center  
for Contemporary Art, Kiev / UKRAINE Vladimir Us, OBERLIHT / CHIOSC,  
Chisinau / REPUBLIC OF MOLDOVA

The special emphasis of the Zagreb SPACES programme will also be on  
the architectural heritage of the Socialist Modernism, the topic of  
continuous engagement of the Slobodne veze / Loose Associations and  
their collaborators / Motel TROGIR team. The Modern Zagreb Guided City  
Tours by Saša Šimpraga will constitute a special part of the program.
