news from Venice:)

Focusing more specifically on the place and presence – or rather the
absence – of Moldovan art in the contemporary discourses and events,
Tatiana Fiodorova reacted to the misrepresentation of Moldova at the Venice
Biennale.

The invisibility of artists from Moldova on the international stage and the
lack of financial support of contemporary art by the state of Moldova
spurred Tatiana to create her own intervention as well, in reaction to the
situation when in 2011, a group of wealthy amateur artists financed their
own Moldovan Pavilion at the Venice Biennale. The artists claimed to
represent Moldovan contemporary art, but what they presented was rather
traditional. As part of a larger art campaign initiated by
KSAK–Contemporary Art Center titled Ghost Pavilion of the Republic of
Moldova, her intervention consisted of designing and printing a series of
t-shirts with the inscription Artist without Pavilion.

Art critic Amy Bryzgel wrote in her book Performance art in Eastern Europe
since 1960 that Tatiana “arrived at a clever means of invading the Venice
Biennale: designing a T-shirt to compensate for her nation’s lack of any
contemporary art representation there in 2011..First, her “Artist Without
Pavilion” shirts were worn around Chisinau as part of an action, as there
was no funding for the artist to travel to Italy. The T-shirts were,
however, displayed in Venice in an exhibition that took place during the
Biennale.”

As an alarm for the marginalization of the country and its struggle for
visibility during the opening of the 58th Venice Biennale, Tatiana just
wrote the sole expression “I AM NOT A TOILET PAPER” on whole roll of toilet
paper.

The performance took place in Giardini della Biennale in different places
near the British pavilion (referring to her early performance I WANT to
LONDON. Are you afraid of me?,2009), near the French pavilion and the
Romanian pavilion. The last point of the trip was the exit from the
Giardini , where Tatiana distributed a gift: a piece of toilet paper with
the inscription “I AM NOT TOILET PAPER, made in MOLDOVA.”

Recently artist has often used toilet paper as material for inspiration in
her artist’s searches. Cheap toilet paper, which she uses has its own
specific features, it is fragile, very loose mostly with pink and gray
tint. Such paper is mainly can found in post-Soviet countries. This
material is symbolically defining her personal place and identity in the
frame of the post-soviet context and globally. It is a metaphorical gesture
about an internal protest and resistance to social and political pressures
and violence experienced by the artist from the state, society,
contemporary global capitalism and art market and also uses it as an
analogy for her position in the art world.

Tatiana Fiodorova (1976) was born, and is based, in Chisinau, Republic of
Moldova.

Moldavian artist, curator, and educator works with questions of social and
political history, particularly in relation to the Post-Soviet transition.
She was born and raised in Soviet Moldova but her formation as an artist
happened in 2000s. Her artistic exploration focuses on the lost Soviet
identity and formation of a new identity for a Moldovan woman facing
social, political, and economic problems. Placed in the context of the
development of market relations and of the emergence of the neoliberal
economy and of contradictory and complex transformations lasting two
decades, very often issues are related to local conflicts and problems in
Moldova, such as the integration of Moldova into the European context and
the problem of identity of Moldovan citizens.
