De Appel is a centre for contemporary art, located in the heart of
Amsterdam. Over the 25 years of its existence it has been operating in an
international network of art centres, museums and other exhibition spaces.
In the projects and exhibitions that have been realised, as well as in
publications and public talks that were organised, the different ways and
contexts in which contemporary art can be presented have been a recurring
item for discussion and reflection.
At its present site, the third after De Appel's founding in 1975, five or
six exhibitions per year are being produced. These may be group
exhibitions or solo shows. Each exhibition is followed by a publication,
which is made in close collaboration with the artist(s) involved.

During the seven months' duration of the programme, the following subjects
are dealt with:
the different positions of artists within the world of contemporary art
the work of art within the changing perspective on authorship and unicity
the different contexts in which art is presented
the role of the curator
management aspects
fundraising for institutions, projects and exhibitions
press and publicity in a low budget situation
information for, and education of visitors

Candidates are expected to have a degree in Art History, or to have
finished their studies at an art academy, and have a considerable
knowledge of art history. Candidates are also expected to have experience
in working in an arts institution (museum, Kunsthalle, gallery or other
organisation). A basic knowledge of all practicalities connected to
realising an exhibition / project is required.

The candidate's ability to speak and write English fluently is a
prerequisite. If the ability to express oneself in English is considered
to be insufficient, we will strongly advise candidates to follow an
intensive course before the start of the programme.

The average age of the CTP-students is 28. Applicants who are much younger
/ older should take into account that this might influence the judgement
of their submission.

De Appel is supported by the Ministry of Education, Culture and Science,
the Municipality of Amsterdam and the Artimo Foundation. To be able to
realise the Curatorial Training Programme, De Appel receives additional
support from the Ministry of Education, Culture and Science and Bloomberg.

The participants in the programme pay a subscription fee of € 2500,-.
During the course De Appel pays for relevant travel costs (in the
Netherlands and abroad), hotel expenses and entrance fees to exhibitions
and museums. Costs for housing and living in Amsterdam are covered by the
participants themselves.

De Appel can not offer grants or scholarships. We strongly advise
candidates to consider and investigate all possible ways of financing
their stay in Amsterdam and their attendance of the programme, even before
they are admitted. Though there are approximately three months between
official admittance and the actual start of the programme, experience is
that almost all governmental bodies, public funds and private foundations,
require an application procedure that is considerably longer. The amount
required for living expenses of the seven months in total would be
-depending on one's personal needs- approximately € 6500,- including rent.

We are able to assist candidates in their search for financial aid by
providing letters of support (after admittance) or letters confirming a
candidate's application, and supplying additional information on De Appel
and the Curatorial Training Programme. If you need more information or
