Project „HANGING AROUND/HeimatQuartier”



“Hanging around” is an international, multimedia project which has
photography as its basis for transformation and use for music, text and
performing arts. It researches the state of hanging around in its
comparability locally, as well as in a European and international context.



The title refers to spending time, sitting in front of your own house, on a
wall close to your home place, on chairs, benches, on the steps or others,
at bus stops without ever taking a bus, at refreshment kiosks, at street
corners and other places, in a village or in the city. These motives of
“spending time without activity” you find all across the world in most
different expressions, many different motivations, traditions or
mentalities.

Mainly it deals with the appropriation of the close environment, with the
participation in social life and with the search for Heimat off your own
four walls.



Social changes and tendencies (demographic development, unemployment,
political changes, immigration, isolation, poverty) is expressed in
attitudes towards “hanging around”. We aim to filter out differences and
common grounds catching and enhancing them as particular motions of spending
time which generally has a negative touch.  “Hanging around” can also be
some protest against the desolation of cities, image of isolation, symbol of
showing yourself, attitude against fast moving times.



To prepare an artistic photographic documentary of people hanging around in
Globalisation is the starting point of this project. There will be an
exhibition which influences the motives in different venues like mobile
“boxes of storage”, waste-land, industrial heritage, empty halls. The will
be presented as a parcours for the observers.

The second step is that every picture will have a short story added, either
dealing with the related people on the photo or created by an author on his
own. This tool will help showing the changes and mentalities, behaviour and
life situations of the people within a well known image: “hanging around”.
There will be an intercultural exchange when i.e. an African author takes a
Czech motive as the basis of a story.

An author can choose from our photos on the website www.hangingaround.de and
send his text to our Email-address info la hangingaround.de. It can be a short
story, a mini-play, an interview or just a thought, even a song or a poem.



The project consists of further elements: We will add music to the single
photos which is either authentically chosen by the ones who were
photographed or selected by the artists. This combination of static photo
material and music you can hear shows further facets like tradition (folk
music or regional sounds), the favourite song or the one, chosen by the
artist as an artificial correlation underlining another reality. Further
more, dancers will develop performances due to some of the photos, either as
something which could have happened before or after the situation which is
seen on the photos.



The project will be realized by the different partners autonomously.
Exhibitions will take place at different places. The output of the project
including the text, theatre and music parts will be shown at spaces which
themselves symbolize changes of structures in the economics and/or society
like empty halls, industrial areas or buildings. The main presentation will
take place at the international festival off limits 2007 in Dortmund.
