* background - RADIO TOWERS and XCHANGE
...As well as being architecturally significant,
Radio Towers have played a remarkable role in
history and a valuable role in the evolution of
radio science since the beginning of last
century. However with the recent developments in
wireless internet technologies these towers that
were sites exclusively used for government and
commerical broadcasts, are now largely symbols of
frequency commodification. The stately towers and
masts now are encircled by a multitude of
self-organising public wifi networks. Unregulated space, the new
public broadcast space, is infectous, it finds new ways to communicate new
things, and broadcasting is becoming a behaviour which is daily and
inevitable. Transmitting, is becoming part of the fabric of urbanexistence...
...In these unregulated spaces Xchange Network
(http://xchange.re-lab.net) has been provoking
cultural, artistic and theoretical practice and
discourse since the advent of streaming media in
the mid 90's. Xchange reflected the new approach
to collaborative, autonomous ad-hoc broadcasting.
Network broadcasts were common place for the
first years of Xchange, with each node in the
network contributing to a online cacophony where
no single node could be distinguished in the mix
from another. Ownership was impossible to
maintain and hence forgotten. Participation
became the goal. The sharing of transmissions was
more exciting than the simultaneous reception of
the same transmission. The doors to the broadcast
towers were not forced open by these pioneers but
ignored, and the landmark symbols of one-to-many
broadcasting was replaced by rambling a network of many-to-manynet.casters...
RTX is both a homage and a criticque of the
broadcasting philosophies and histories the radio
towers represent, and an investigation into
the evolving practice of unregulated online broadcasting...

acclaimed video artist *Bob Milosevic* - rx:tx in
collaboration with Zavod projekt Atol, Codeep and
Kataman is proud to present the concert of one of
the pioneers of contemporary electronica
*Christian Fennesz* (Mego/Touch, Austria).
Almost a decade after the release of his
literally ground-breaking album *Endless Summer*,
there is really no need to introduce Fennesz. The
recent highlights of his diverse artistic career
are collaborations with Mike Patton, Riyuichi
Sakamoto, Keith Rowe, Toshimaru Nakamura, Elliot
Sharp and many more. We are specially pleased to
be bringing together these two artists on the
same bill, as their musical explorations and
extensions of using the guitar in electronic
music and electromagnetism are covering similar ground.
The concert is a part of WAVES RADIO TOWER EXCHANGE project.

SONIFICATION OF YOU
Martin John Callanan (UK)
Interactivity has become ambient. Individual
people are no longer isolated resulting from the
scaling up of networks and the scaling down of
the apparatus for transmission and reception.
Various communication devices always carried are
continuously emitting and receiving information.
This continuous data flow is both invisible and
often, by the majority of people, unknown.
Today¹s hand-held devices can be seen as
extensions of the human body allow ubiquitous,
inescapable network interconnectivity.
The Sonification of You' aims to make this data
flow 'visible' to those people carrying the
active devices. Our equipment will passively scan
the various radio spectrum frequencies used by
mobile phone devices, Bluetooth, WiFi networks,
and others used by mobile devices, within a given
space. The data information then represented by
assigned audio sounds that will indicate
activity, distance, and strength of signals.
Drawing on methods for monitoring large computer
networks, the result is to create a background
'sound' for a room that is representational of
the people, and their devices, present.
The invisible become audible and therefore
visible. Allowing individuals to become aware of their constantconnectivity.
* * *
Apparatus for scanning the radio frequencies used
by digital devices feeds into our laptop running
a custom program. This program can analyse and
identify the different types of data; such as
when a mobile phone says "hello" to a base
station, this will be different to when a SMS is
sent. All of the frequencies are simultaneously
scanned and analysed. The computer is able to
separate and identify the different types of
data; this is then used to trigger a sound to
represent it. Different types of data are
represented by different instruments; so mobile
phones are different from BlueTooth.
Then, individual devices have a different place
on the instrument's scale. Each new mobile device
the system discovered is placed separately on the
audio scale so can be heard separately. The sound
is produced by a synthesiser. This lite version
uses arbitrary instruments. We are currently
working with an expert in digital sound
perception to create a version capable to convey
the information in a more natural audible sense.
* * *
Sonification: using non-speech audio to convey
information, is particularly useful when there is
an abundance of data to be considered.

VLF IN PARIS
Horia Cosmin Samo?la / Spectral Investigations Collective (France)
Urban sites like country landscapes are immersed
in a new kind of electromagnetic flux and
pulsations with the rise of the last generation
communication technologies. The old analogic
radio modulation waves are supplanted by digital
discontinuous signals. This constitute a new
environment in which ecological, biological and
cognitive aspects of our society are in constant
mutation and evolution. Probably, by the past,
mutation factors came from planetary and cosmic
electromagnetic activity. Now, GSM, radio
emitters and relays, having replaced guard and
bell-towers, and and scramble the natural
frequencies. Paris, "City of Lights", presents
with the Eiffel Tower a good position to reveal
both VLF and electrosmog activity. Pulsed
electromagnetic information and natural
electroplasmic echoes constitutes an emerging
plastic material, whose insidious interaction
with the alive one and cognitive process reveal
new fields of exploration in the slides of our technologic interfacesociety.

CAMPA-SACROW (2007),
proposal for the project RADIO-TOWER-Xchange project for t e s l a /Berlin.
Jan-Peter E.R. Sonntag (Germany)
'i use the physical innerarchitecture of the
space (in Berlin and Potsdam) to re-play a part
of my RAWextension f5 before i will transform
this sereal data into a high frequent pulse of
greyscale informations - a Raw-Morse-video, which can download on Yourmobil.'
(RAWextension / 1ch. black&white video, mono sound for mobil download)
Adolph Slaby was the only person from a foreign
country, being part of the first succesful
wireless telegraph experiment by Marconi in
England in May 1897. Being back in Germany only
three month later at the 27th of August together
with his his assistent Graf von Arco he could
"morse" a signal over a distance of 1,6km from
the tower of the the Saviour's Church at Sacrow.
So the tower - in italian "campanile" becaurse
of the neo-byzantinic style of the archtecture of
the church - had been the first antenna-tower or
"radio-tower" and transmission station in germany in 1897.
In reference to this historical and topological
point, the church of Sacrow at the river Havel
close to Potsdam and Berlin, i will use for the
physical part of the production: the physical
innerarchitecture of the space to re-play a part
of my RAWextension f5 before i will transform
this sereal data into a high frequent pulse of
greyscale informations - a Raw-Morse-video, which can download on Yourmobil.
To use the data from RAWextension f5 again links
this new composition to the sonArc-project and LOST IN TRANSLATION.

FF FF FF FF FF FF FF In 1954 Karlheinz
Stockhausen composed his 'Studie 2' in the
Cologne studio of WDR. In this piece the composer
applied serial composition techniques
'stringently' to electronic sound production
within the bounds of his technical resources and
his artistic settings. The basic element is the
sinus tone; all parameters are derived from the
25th root of 5. The 'original' is a tape, while
the subsequently produced graphic score
translation is an attempt to make the music
visually and thus structurally comprehensible.
Today the 'Studie 2' is available on CD in
digitalized form, and thus as a thousand-fold original.
I took this data volume, removed the header and
optically interpolated it around
Faktor5. This operational act left the serial
structure intact. The resulting RAW file was read
within sonArc::ion - prologue as video in mono
sound, as a static image and as characters. The
data become perceivable in space as flickering
patterns of stripes synchronized with the
acoustic analogue transformation and the strings
of letters of the hexadit program.
The result is a multimedia / synesthetic
space-sound composition in the tradition of
classical modernism high-resolution but minimal: black and white andmono."

POWER LINES IN SWEDEN. Sounds and behavior of the Swedish power lines.
Nils Edvardsson
Electricity sounds. When current flows through
the powerlines, different sounds are generated.
Some of the are easy to hear. If you stand under
the lines, frying sounds can be heard. Other
sound is weaker and need to be amplified. The
sound is changing due to the amount of current
passing and there are big variations over the
time. Larger consumption of electricity generates
more sounds, and in that sense the sound of the
power line is the sound of the modern society, a
big string instrument that respond of our daily chores.
The recordings are made with accelometers, piezo
elements and standard microphones. All the sounds
was captured on portable hard disc recorders.
Idea and recording: Nils Edvardsson. Technical
advisor: Fredrik Norrgren. Producer: Bjorn Norberg / Interactive Institute.

RINGSENDUNG RIGA 2007.
Superfactory(TM) (Germany/Lithuania)
We celebrate 1000 Years of Radio in an ultra
quick week of Hoerspiel. Do you remember the
design of the Ringsendungen, the perfect hookup
for the circular social band? We will set up this
globalized network en miniature on a table with
Mini-FM transmitters and notebooks. Brecht and
Enzensberger were right, but Baudrillard was
righter, wasn't he? Can you see the future of
your MurdochSpace? Event 65 years later (since
1942) it's not yours, don't take it!

SOLAR RADIO STATION.
Clausthome and Martins Ratniks (Latvia)
Solar Radiostation is a collaboration among the
artists of RIXC (LV) and r a d i o q u a l i a
(NZ), Clausthome (LV) musicians, and VIRAC -
Ventspils International Radio Astronomy Center
(LV) scientists. (http://rixc.lv/solar)
As an installation and live performance it first
took place in Phoenix Hall in Dortmund, May 2006.
Realtime scanning of Solar system's objects (Sun,
Jupiter, Taurus, Cygnus) was performed in Irbene,
Latvia using former military antenna RT-32 of
VIRAC radiotelescope. The signal was downsampled
to audible frequency and transmitted live via the
Internet, where in Dortmund it was picked up by
Clausthome artists for real-time interpetations.
Solar Radiostation performance for RTX event will
be using pre-recorded files from Irbene live
scans, and will turn this noise from the space
into realtime sound modelling performance and live video mix.
