Iconographic Studies in Croatia: Animal Symbolism in Christian Art and
Literature

Department of Art history (University of Rijeka) and Study of Theology in
Rijeka (University of Zagreb) organize the Second International Conference
of Iconographic Studies in Croatia: Animal Symbolism in Christian Art and
Literature in Rijeka, 22-24 May, 2008.

This conference is organized to encourage interdisciplinary dialogue as
well as to continue the cycle of sessions for scholarly discourse on one
of the most significant subjects in art history: relation between word and
image within art. The conference presentations will be dealing with
different subjects concerning animal symbolism in order to discuss to what
extent did the visual art follow textual model, in what degree did the
illustrated word convey symbolic meaning and how did the image comprehend
and conform to the particular learning and disputes throughout the
history. Here are the themes and subjects for discussion:
- Animals as vehicles for religious allegory and moral instruction
- Animals in art and thought through the history
- Animals and symbolic associations
- Animals in the Old and New Testament
- Animals in the texts of the Early Christian writers
- Bestiaries – varieties of texts, source for the visual interpretation in
different media
- Renaissance and Baroque emblems as moral and didactic images
- Influences of Islamic Art and Literature

Our goal is, as well, to inform scholars, students and other interested in
the field on the recent research results in the studies in iconography.
The conference papers will deal with methodological approaches within
iconography and iconology with special emphasis on the problem of
disintegration of traditional definition of methodology in the art
history. New methods, new concepts and scholarship stressed the need of
interdisciplinary approach in research which resulted in somewhat altered
interpretation of the meaning of images.
