Le Rapport Attali (ou Rapport de la  Commission pour la libération de la
croissance française), commandé par le président Sarkozy et publié il y a
de  cela six mois, a provoqué toute une série de discussions, principalement
confinées à la sphère publique française et concentrées sur ses propositions
concrètes, visant à instaurer un modèle néo-libéral pour l'économie et la
société française. Mais, étonnamment, le Rapport Attali constitue un texte
intéressant, en particulier pour son introduction littéraire emphatique, qui
constitue en soi l'une des premières instances majeures où le système néo-
libéral est affirmé au-delà du discours plutôt discret sur les "réformes
nécessaires" dans lequel il s'est insinué depuis les années 1980. Ce système
est aujourd'hui considéré comme un paradigme historique concret, d'une ère
révolutionnairement nouvelle, faisant du Rapport Attali un document
significatif au regard des tentatives actuelles pour imaginer un récit
dominant qui représenterait et organiserait l'étendue de notre système
global.

Toutefois, cette exposition ne traite pas directement du Rapport Attali et
ne constitue pas non plus un rapport en soi. Ce que l'exposition tente en
revanche, c'est de présenter des fictions et des images, proposant une
lecture de différents récits qui se sont chevauchés pendant ces dernières
décennies dans notre pensée politique, à différentes périodes et en
différents lieux. L'exposition se réfère à la désintégration de l'utopie
communiste ainsi qu'à des images, passions, histoires et réactions qui ont
accompagné ce processus ; elle aborde la rencontre de la fiction et de la
pensée utopique des deux côtés du Rideau de fer ; évoque des processus
d'exotisation et de construction des nations et prend en compte la formation
de communautés de lutte et de résistance.

Mais les oeuvres ne font pas que présenter ces récits de manière passive,
elles les modifient et participent – même indirectement - à leur
fabrication. L'exposition se joue à ce niveau d'interaction situé entre le
récit (« story telling ») et l'imaginaire politique, un nœud qui cristallise
le potentiel politique de l'art comme agent de représentation. Elle
rassemble ces occurrences et ces positions, tantôt contradictoires, tantôt
invraisemblables et parfois même engagées de manière passionnée et
déterminée.

La référence au Rapport Attali sur l'état de la France, en tant qu'ancrage
hautement spécifique et local, est utilisée en vue d'amener la discussion
vers une perspective plus large, pour marquer les moments et les blocages –
autant que les espaces d'articulation – qui ont contribué à la crise
actuelle qui paralyse la possibilité d'imaginer un langage et un champ pour
le politique.

L'exposition est accompagnée par les interventions d'écrivains et de
critiques, ainsi que par un  programme de films qui fait écho à certaines
idées présentes dans l'exposition, par le biais du langage cinématographique
et de ses possibilités propres.

The Attali Report (or the Report of the Commission for the Liberation of
French Growth), commissioned by President Sarkozy, was published half a year
ago, provoking a long series of discussions, mainly confined to the French
public arena and mainly focused on the report's concrete proposals, set to
implement a neoliberal model for the French economy and society. But the
Attali Report is a surprisingly interesting text, especially in its emphatic
high brow literary introduction, being one of the first major instances
where the neoliberal system is asserted beyond the rather discreet discourse
of the "necessary reforms" through which it has insinuated itself since the
eighties. It is now invested with the value of a concrete historical
paradigm, of a describable era of revolutionary novelty, making the Attali
Report a relevant document for the current attempts to imagine a dominant
narrative representing and organizing the scope of our global system.

However, this exhibition is neither about the Attali Report nor is it a
report itself. It does, nonetheless, try to unfold fictions and images that
offer an insight on different narratives that have been overlapping for the
past decades in our thinking of politics, at different times and in
different localities. It refers to the disintegration of the communist
utopia and some images, passions, stories and reactions that came along with
this process; it visits the meeting of fiction and Utopian thinking on both
sides of the Iron Curtain; it mentions some processes of exoticization and
nation building; it acknowledges the formation of communities of struggle
and resistance.

But the works don't passively present such narratives, they alter them and
participate - albeit indirectly - to their fabrication. The exhibition works
at this point of interaction between story telling and political
imagination, a knot that encapsulates the political potential of art as an
agent of representation. It brings together these occurrences and positions,
sometimes contradictory, sometimes doubtful and sometimes passionately
engaged and determined.

The reference to the Attali report on the state of France, a highly specific
and local anchor, is used to take the discussion into a wider perspective,
to mark the moments and the blockages - as well as some parallel areas of
articulation - that have contributed to the current crisis in the
imagination of a language and a scope for politics.

The exhibition is accompanied by interventions of writers and critics and by
a film program that reiterates a few lines of the exhibition, using the
cinematic language and its potentials.
