Proiectul CHIOȘC – str. București 68/1, Chișinău

Sîmbăta, 31 octombrie 2009, Asociaţia Oberliht vă invită la  
lansarea APARTAMENT DESCHIS/FLAT SPACE (de Ștefan RUSU).

Acest eveniment va fi precedat de acțiunea publică Tîrg de Vechituri  
unde vă invităm să veniți și să repuneți în circuit diverse  
obiectele uitate și învechite (cărți, reviste, casete, CD-uri și  
alte chestii), care au o valoare artistică sau culturală – să le  
vindeți, distribuiți sau să faceți schimb cu ele.

Vă așteptăm pe toți începînd cu ora 14:00!

Punctul de plecare în elaborarea APARTAMENT DESCHIS/FLAT SPACE a  
constat în ideea expunerii publice a unui spațiu privat alias a unui  
apartament tip caracteristic arhitecturii rezidențiate socialiste,  
care încă domină peisajul urban şi social al țărilor est  
europene. APARTAMENT DESCHIS a fost conceput ca o piesă de  
arhitectură cu funcții şi semnificații multiple. Datorită faptului  
că arhitectura se caracterizează printr-o funcționalitate şi  
estetică bine definită, preocuparea mea din start a fost să  
depăşesc ideea unei funcționalitatăți fixe.

Alegerea de a replica un apartament a fost influențată şi de  
preocuparea mea de spații şi contexte ce definesc această regiune  
şi societate, care s-a format aşa cum o cunoaştem astăzi în  
rezultatul modernizării socialiste. Întreaga societate din RSSM  
(Republica Sovietică Socialistă Moldovenească) a fost adaptată  
standardelor socialiste sovietice, inclusiv ideii creării omului nou  
şi cultului valorilor ce subliniază importanța familiei în  
edificarea unei societăți omogene.  Designerii şi arhitecții au  
preluat aceste politici în rezultatul cărora a fost creat un habitat  
tipic în care omul şi familia sa puteau trăi productiv.

Un alt aspect din lucrare care m-a motivat este determinat de  
gasterbeiterii locali, care lucrează temporar (unii legal, însă  
majoritatea ilegat) fie in Rusia fie în țările UE (Spania, Italia,  
Portugalia etc.). Acest tip de muncă este caracteristic populației  
din alte țări est europene şi poate fi explicat prin tendința  
acestora de a obține un statul social mai înalt şi un spațiu  
personal de locuit la oraş, indiferent de mărimea acestuia. Pentru  
majoritatea populației procurarea unui apartament reprezintă cea mai  
eficientă investiție financiară, ceea ce devine rapid un semn al  
stabilității economice în perioada post-tranziție.

FLAT SPACE / APARTAMENT DESCHIS este o replică funcţională a unui  
apartament cu o cameră, care cuprinde elementele de bază a unui  
habitat tipic socialist: bucătăria, baia, camera de zi şi balconul  
îmbrăcat în termopan. Transparenţa şi caracterul deschis al  
construcției constituie un principiu important, deoarece apartamentul  
este lipsit de pereţii exteriori (cu excepția faţadei) iar  
interiorul acestuia este expus publicului. Mobilierul şi alte  
instalații din apartament sînt sugerate direct pe podea ca o schiţă  
tehnică.

Lucrarea reprezintă un modul arhitectural ce urmează un pattern de  
planificare urbană – un spațiu locativ extras dintr-un bloc de  
apartamente şi amplasat în spațiul public, unde va funcționa în  
calitate de platformă deschisă. În ultima instanță în calitate de  
material primar pentru APARTAMENT DESCHIS a servit betonul armat  
folosit la fabricarea blocurilor de apartamente. Cu toate că şi  
sistemul socialist şi cel capitalist dispuneau de materiale şi  
tehnologii moderne metalul şi betonul armat a fost pe larg folosit în  
societățile din Est şi din Vest în procesul modernizării de după  
război.

ARTIST

Ștefan RUSU  (născut in 1964, Kâietu, Moldova, artist vizual şi  
curator stabilit la Chişinău, Moldova şi Bucureşti, România).

Agenda sa artistică și curatorială este strâns legată de procesele  
și schimbările survenite în societățile post-socialiste. RUSU s-a  
format ca artist vizual, iar ulterior şi-a extins practica şi  
laboratorul creativ prin elaborarea şi producerea proiectelor  
curatoriale, editarea programelor TV, producerea filmelor  
experimentale, a documentarelor şi reportajelor în format TV. În  
2005-06 a urmat Programul Curatorial Shtichting DE APPEL unde a co- 
produs Mercury in Retrograde (http://www.mercuryinretrograde.org)

Proiectul CHIOŞC, punct de informare cultural şi platformă publică  
de manifestare a fost lansat în oraşul Chişinău. Este conceput  
într-un context social-politic complex al procesului de tranziţie,  
intenţionînd să promoveze arta contemporană şi cultura tinerilor  
în spaţiul public prin strierea şi contaminarea informaţională a  
teritoriului urban, să încurajeze participarea activă a diverselor  
categorii de persoane reprezentînd diferite domenii deseori  
marginalizate și oferindu-le o platformă de manifestare publică, să  
întărească rețelele locale și cele internaționale de operatori  
și profesioniști din domeniul culturii, să influențeze politicile  
publice în vederea extinderii accesului și utilizării mai puțin  
restricționate a spațiul public.

Proiectul intenţionează să prezinte diversitatea şi bogăţia unor  
practici artistice din majoritatea ţărilor care formează continentul  
european, astfel unul dintre obiective este de a invita artişti,  
teoreticieni, operatori culturali să participe în activităţile  
CHIOŞC-ului cu expoziţii, ateliere, proiecţii, prezentări,  
întâlniri ş. a.

APARTAMENT DESCHIS/FLAT SPACE este o replică funcţională a unui  
apartament de tip socialist, elaborat de artistul visual Stefan RUSU  
pentru a reprezenta identitatea proiectului CHIOŞC.

Punctul de plecare în elaborarea designului a fost preocuparea pentru  
a expune public spaţiul privat al unui apartament limitat de  
standardele societăţii socialiste. Fenomenul blocurilor sociale este  
unul caracteristic ţărilor post-comuniste din Estul Europei şi care  
încă domină peisajul urban şi definesc identitatea spaţiului  
public.

Structura deschisă a apartamentului sugerează idea unui modul extras  
dintr-un bloc de apartamente cu elementele de bază specifice  
societăţilor aflate în tranziţie: faţada principală cu un balcon  
împachetat în termopan, camera de zi, bucătăria şi un grup  
sanitar. Balconul este elementul cheie care va funcţiona ca punct de  
informare şi diseminare a informaţiei cu caracter cultural, în timp  
ce spaţiul efectiv al apartamentului expus publicului va avea un  
caracter multifuncţional şi va servi drept o platformă deschisă  
pentru prezentări publice şi evenimente culturale.

Saturday, October 31st, 2009, Oberliht Association invites you to the  
launch of the FLAT SPACE / APARTAMENT DESCHIS project (designed by  
Stefan RUSU).

This event will be preceded by the Flee Market public action. Feel  
free to bring with you forgotten and old objects (books, magazines,  
tapes, CDs and other stuff) that carry cultural or artistic value,  
which you would like to reinsert in circuit. You are invited to sell  
them, distribute, share or exchange.

Everybody is welcome starting with 2 pm!

The point of departure for the design of the FLAT SPACE/APARTAMENT  
DESCHIS project was to publically display the private space of a flat  
that represents the standard for socialist residential architecture,  
which still continues to be a strong visual element within the  
contemporary urban and social landscape of East European countries.  
Originally the project was conceived as a structure with multiple  
meanings and functions. Given that architecture comes with a specific  
kind of well-defined functionality and aesthetics, I was initially  
concerned with overcoming the idea of fixed functionality.

This choice to replicate an apartment is informed by my interest in  
the spaces and contexts that define this region and community, which  
have emerged in their current form as a result of socialist  
modernization. The entire society of the MSSR (Moldavian Soviet  
Socialist Republic) adapted to Soviet social standards—including the  
ideal of creating a new man and the cultivation of values that  
underscored the family as the building blocks of a homogeneous  
society. The designers and architects carried that policy forward, and  
thus typified habitats were created, in which a man and his family  
would live productively.

Another aspect motivating the project is an increasing factor of local  
gastarbeiters who work temporarily (some of them legally, but most of  
them illegally) either in Russia or in EU countries (Spain, Italy,  
Portugal, etc.). This employment situation is very common among the  
populations of other East European countries, and it drives the  
tendency of such workers to have a higher social status and possess  
their own living space in the city, regardless of size. For most of  
the population acquiring a flat is the most efficient financial  
investment they can make, and it rapidly become a sign of economic  
stability in the post-transition period.

The FLAT SPACE/APARTAMENT DESCHIS project is a functional replica of a  
one-room apartment that comprises the basic components of a typical  
socialist living space: the kitchen, the bathroom, the living room,  
and the balcony. The transparency and openness of the structure is an  
important feature of the project, since the apartment has no external  
walls (with the exception of the façade), and the flat interior is  
exposed to the public. The furniture and other installments in the  
apartment are directly on the floor as a technical sketch.

The project is a sample of architecture born from urban planning—a  
living area extracted from a typified socialist building block and  
placed in public space, where it will function as an open space/ 
platform. Finally, the primary material for the FLAT SPACE project was  
the reinforced concrete used in the fabrication of typified  
blockhouses. Although many modern technologies and materials were  
equally common in the socialist and capitalist systems, concrete and  
metal rebar were widely used in both Eastern and Western societies  
during the period of post-war modernisation.

ARTIST

Stefan RUSU (born in 1964, Kâietu, Moldova, artist and curator based  
in Chisinau and Bucharest).

His artist and curatorial agenda is closely connected to undergoing  
processes and changes occurred in the post-socialist societies before  
and after 1989 Rusu was trained as visual artist and later extended  
his practice to curating, managing and fundraising projects, editing  
TV programs, producing experimental films, TV reports and  
documentaries. In 2005/2006 he attended the Curatorial Training  
Program at Stichting De Appel from Amsterdam where he co-curated

The CHIOŞC project, a cultural info-point and a public platform for  
participation is being launched in the city of Chisinau. It has been  
conceived in a complex social and political context that marks the  
period of transition, with the intention to promote contemporary art  
and youth culture in public space by contaminating the urban territory  
with relevant information. It is meant to encourage active  
participation of diverse social groups representing often marginalized  
or less visible domains by putting at their disposal a public platform  
for manifestation, to strengthen local and develop regional and  
international network of cultural operators and professionals, to  
influence the existing public policies and local authorities to extend  
the access to public space and allow it’s less restricted usage.

This project intends to present the diversity and richness of various  
art practices carried out in different parts of European continent,  
thus one of its objectives is to invite artists, theorists, cultural  
workers to participate in CHIOŞC’s activities with exhibitions,  
workshops, screenings, talks etc.

The FLAT SPACE/APARTAMENT DESCHIS project is a functional replica of a  
socialist apartment designed by Stefan RUSU commissioned to represent  
the identity of CHIOSC project.

The point of departure for the design of the FLAT SPACE/APARTAMENT  
DESCHIS project was to publically display the private space of a flat  
limited by the standards of the socialist society, which still is a  
strong visual element within the contemporary urban and social  
landscape of East European countries.

The transparency and the openness of the flat give the exposure to an  
architectural model extracted from the flat building that is composed  
from few basic elements characteristic to societies in transitions:  
the main façade with a balcony covered with plastic windows, dining  
room, kitchen and bathroom. The balcony is a key element, which will  
function as a cultural info point and will distribute information with  
cultural content. The rest of the space that is exposed to the public  
will bear a multifunctional character and will serve as an open  
platform for public presentations and cultural events.
