Announcement for scholarships 2010


K?nstlerdorf Sch?ppingen Foundation is announcing its annual and
international open call for entries 2010 regarding the scholarships
(residencies) of the foundation. On offer are on the whole:

- Up to 12 sholarships for writers (this includes radio drama,
theater; new, experimental ways of writing)

- Up to 12 sholarships for visual arts

- Up to 6 sholarships Mixed Media / New Media and / or projects
showing an innovative multidisciplinary response

- 1 sholarship covering modern music composition (featuring
experimental characteristics)

The monthly scholarship amounts to 1025,- Euros.
The maximum residency-period is 4 months.
Completion of the granted period of time in the artists village is essential

15 January 2010

K?nstlerdorf Sch?ppingen was founded in 1989. Contributors of the
foundation are the State of NRW, the NRW Foundation

F?rderverein Stiftung K?nstlerdorf Sch?ppingen e.V. The K?nstlerdorf
Sch?ppingen itself consists of two completely restaured spacious farm
buildings, both listed historical mouments and both conveniently done
up for the stay of visual artists, writers and composers with flats,
apartments, studios and working facilities.

		Res Artis regional meeting in Warsaw

 Overview from Karol Fr?hauf, Res Artis Treasurer

 The first Res Artis regional meeting in Eastern Europe took place at
the Ujazdowski Castle in Warsaw, Poland, from November 16th till 19th
under the umbrella of the "Re-tooling Residencies" conference. It
attracted more than 150 participants from the East and from West (even
several from overseas), large publicly financed residencies and small
privately funded ones. There were a considerable number of emerging
residencies, mostly from Eastern Europe, but also from West, so it was
no surprise that the two Res Artis Training & Support workshops, under
the new program title "ResSupport", had more than 45 participants. It
was a great pleasure to see the variety of emerging residencies, to
feel the enthusiasm of their initiators and to understand that
guidance in setting up a residency is a real need. Res Artis has made
the right strategic choice in pursuing this programme with the help of
EU grants. Thanks to Marijke Jansen and Irene Saddal for their great
work supported by Julie Upmeyer.

 The five panel discussions included some very impressive and thought
provoking presentations. The words of Jean-Baptiste Joly, the director
of the Akademie Schloss Solitude in Stuttgart, Germany, were
outstanding not only in presenting the achievements of his
institution, but by his expressed attitude towards the cultural
integration of Europe. All panels were followed by lively discussions,
which continued during the breaks, lunches, dinners and evening
activities.

 A big compliment to the organiser a-i-r laboratory and CCA
Ujazdowski Castle, lead by Ika Sienkiewicz-Nowacka for gathering so
many interested people form Poland and abroad, for giving some 30
young art students the possibility to learn about residencies and for
giving the opportunity to the visitors from abroad to tour through the
galleries and the town. The food was excellent and plenty, the
ambience friendly, the atmosphere pleasant. All participants left
Warsaw richer through new friends and empowered by new insights. It
was an important event, ingraining the concept of residencies in new
and fertile grounds.

Contents May Vary exhibit three independent solo shows in the three 
corresponding spaces at Red Gallery.

Contents May Vary is a Manchester based artist collective co-directed by 
Alice Bradshaw, Liz Murphy and Richard Shields. The artists have been 
working collectively since 2004 and this is the first time the group 
will exhibit alongside each other in a gallery context as a three.

Having always worked closely together to produce a variety of large 
scale group shows and collaborations site-responsively, primarily in 
alternative non-gallery spaces, the collective will now take on a 
white-walled gallery space and a vow of non-communication between each 
other in the lead up the this exhibition.

Working in separate studios on both side of the Pennines, the artists 
have made work in secrecy, only communicating their plans to Red Gallery 
and selected peers with the promise they cannot inform any other member 
of Contents May Vary.

In an unprecedented curatorial approach for Contents May Vary, who 
usually co-direct, co-curate and co-feature in each project together 
this experiment will feature the three artists' individual work as solo 
shows in the context of a Contents May Vary collective show.

About the Festival:

ElectroSmog is a new festival that explores the concept ?Sustainable
Immobility? in theory and practice. Sustainable Immobility is first of all a
critique of the growing global crisis of mobility. Current forms of
hyper-mobility of people and products in travel and transport are
 ecologically increasingly unsustainable. The will to slow down, however,
seems thoroughly absent. The economic crisis may have temporarily slowed
matters down, long term projections still point towards exponential growth
of worldwide mobility and exploding energy needs.  Alternatives for the
current state of hyper-mobility need to be designed urgently.

The exploration of Sustainable Immobility is a quest for a lifestyle less
determined by speed and constant mobility. A lifestyle that celebrates
stronger links to local cultures, while at the same time deepening our
connections to others across any geographical divide by means of new
communication technologies, instead of physical travel.

The ElectroSmog festival will engage one of the main promises information
age: that communication technologies can replace the need for physical
mobility and thereby contribute directly to ecological stability. Our
increased tele-connections would lead to a more rewarding deep local
lifestyle (homework in the electronic cottage) and to richer connected
experiences with the rest of the world (the global village). While these
promises have existed since the dawn of the information age, they were never
fully realised. The  expanding mobility and energy crisis requires us,
however, to re-examine these promises and find out how to turn them into
viable life-style choices.

ElectroSmog will not take the underlying premises of the information age for
granted. We want to ask questions such as:
Are increased electronic connections truly more energy efficient and
ecologically sustainable?
Do they lead to new forms of  electromagnetic pollution (electrosmog)?
How can the revitalisation of the local be combined with a responsible
global consciousness?
How can remote connections become a truly rewarding experience in and of
themselves?

Technology alone is never the answer. We are looking for both technological
and non-technological solutions to the central question of the festival: How
can a sustainably immobile way of life be achieved?


Bringing Together a Broad Coalition:

The ElectroSmog festival brings together a broad coalition of designers,
environmentalists, urban and spatial planners, technologists, artists,
theorists, and engaged and concerned citizens, to explore and ?design?
sustainable immobility.

ElectroSmog is a truly international festival, with everything you might
expect: international debates and discussions, performances, art projects,
exhibits, site specific projects, screenings, a design competition, and
more.  ElectroSmog stakes its claim for a radical break with the current
systems of hyper-mobility not simply by discussing the issue, but by
actually implementing it.


No Travel Allowed!
Connecting the Local Off-Line with the International On-Line:

The very concept of an international festival and its traditional
conventions has been rethought and redesigned from the ground up. This has
lead us to a few basic ground rules that will apply for all festival events:
- No presenter will travel beyond their local or regional boundaries to
participate in this event.
- All festival events will always take place in at least two locations
connected in real-time.
- A crucial dimension of the festival will be its on-line presence, where
audiences from basically anywhere with an internet connection can follow
events on-line, join in discussions and debates, visit virtual theatres in

A network of accomplished cultural and new media centres, labs, theatres and
other public venues work together to create the local ?hubs? that will
inter-connect on-line for the festival.


Beyond the Broadband Enclaves:

ElectroSmog acknowledges from the start that bandwidth is not equally
distributed across and within societies. Therefore remote connection to
lower bandwidth spaces, do-it-yourself telematics, and information
technologies for the majority world will be one the central concerns the
festival will address.

International Design Competition

ElectroSmog has initiated its own design competition for young designers,
artists, students, and professionals to come up with design scenario?s,
life-style proposals, prototypes or demo-designs for sustainable immobility.

The competition invites proposals, scenario studies, demos, prototypes or
other innovative ideas to in response to the question: How can we design
sustainable immobility?

The winner will be awarded eternal fame and a fully equipped residency,
generously hosted by the Banff New Media Institute, to execute her or his
ideas.

Technology Transfer and Content Follow-up:

ElectroSmog will make extensive use of existing and open source technologies
that will be integrated in a re-useable web environment, developed in
collaboration with the Cool Mediators Foundation and De Balie in Amsterdam.
The technical processes will be documented in a post-festival documentation
workshop organised with the innovative Floss Manuals organisation, resulting
in a freely downloadable manual and a print on demand publication available
from the Floss Manuals website.
The outcomes of the discussions, debates and theoretical seminars will lead
to an international follow-up publication, currently under negotiation and
planned for the Fall of 2010.

THE PROGRAM
The School of Visual Arts??? MFA program in documentary filmmaking
provides a solid foundation in the fundamentals of nonfiction
filmmaking, as well as an immersion into the critical and analytical
processes necessary to conceptualize and develop significant,
socially relevant film projects. This program represents the
convergence of journalism, social activism and the art of
filmmaking.

Within the broad spectrum, a documentary film can be personal,
revolutionary, engaging, funny, political and more; simply put,
social documentary films tell us more about ourselves and the world
we inhabit. Working with documentarians at the top of their field as
teachers and mentors in a collaborative think-tank environment, the
MFA Documentary Film program at SVA will not only teach students how
to tell a story; it will guide them towards lifelong careers in
filmmaking.

The first year of study offers a core curriculum devoted to exploring
the past, present and future of the art of documentary film while
mastering tools and techniques needed to tell compelling stories. In
the first year each student will complete a few documentary shorts.
During the entire second year the student focuses on their thesis
film, and courses are designed to support them in their production.
Each student will direct and edit his or her own thesis film and
serve as a key production crewmember on at least one other thesis
project.

FACULTY
Core courses in directing, producing, editing, visionary journalism,
cinematography and sound are taught by some of the most significant
filmmakers in documentary today. Additionally, a weekly Process &
Style screening and lecture series will welcome yet more voices from

FACILITY???
The department is located in the heart of Manhattan on 21st Street
and 6th Avenue, and houses an HD theater, two additional
classrooms/work rooms, state of the art editing suites, a film and
text library and voice over recording room. In addition to the
department space, each student has access to the latest HD video
cameras, lighting and sound equipment.

DEADLINE EXTENSION: FEBRUARY 1, 2010

The Consortium for Women and Research, in conjunction with Film
Studies at UC Davis, is pleased to announce that it is now accepting
submissions for the 2010 festival to be held on April 9 and 10, 2010
at the Veteran's Memorial Center Theater in Davis, CA.

The Davis Feminist Film Festival welcomes short films (35 minutes or
less) from professionals, students, and community members locally,
nationally, and internationally. People underrepresented in the media
field are especially encouraged to submit a film for consideration.

Films submitted to the festival for consideration must meet two of the
following criteria:
1) Films created with an eye for gender and/or social justice issues
2) Films that link local & global issues
3) Films created by people underrepresented in the media field (women,
people of color, queer/transgender, disabled, etc)
4) Films made by people from the Davis/Sacramento area (Filmmakers
from other areas are encouraged to submit their work.)

HOW TO SUBMIT
Send a DVD of your film with a short cover letter addressing how your
film fits two of the submission criteria, filmmaker CV, short film

Po izjemno pozitivnem strokovnem sprejemu in absurdni cenzuri delnega
izbora prijavljenih del na razstavi ob konferenci o tabujih v slovanskih
kulturah "Tabuslav" v poljskem mestu Poznanj, vnovi&#269; objavljamo poziv
umetnikom iz celega sveta!

Tabuji so tako globoko ukoreninjeni v kulturah razli&#269;nih dru?b in
dru?benih skupin, da jih pogosto niti ne opazimo in ne podvomimo v njihov
smisel, &#269;eprav bistveno vplivajo na na?o resni&#269;nost, dojemanje,
obna?anje in tako bistveno vplivajo na na?a ?ivljenja. Vabimo vas, da
skozi umetni?ka dela, ki so vsaj delno narejena v tehnikah tradicionalnih
ro&#269;nih del raziskujete tradicionalne ali nove tabuje ? prehrambene,
spolne, nacionalne, verske, politi&#269;ne in druge.

Umetni?ke stvaritve so lahko dvodimenzionalne ali tridimenzionalne,
narejene v tehnikah tradicionalnih ro&#269;nih del kot so klekljanje,
kva&#269;kanje, pletenje, vezenje, polstenje, tkanje in podobne, ali pa iz
obstoje&#269;ih ro&#269;nih del (lahko tudi drugih izdelovalcev), ki so
predelana v novo umetni?ko stvaritev. Izbor materialov je prost, dimenzije
najve&#269; 3 x 3 m, najve&#269;ja te?a 50 kg.

Prijave s fotografijami ali natan&#269;nimi skicami del (najve&#269; 5) z
opisom, navedbo tehnike, dimenzij in te?e poslati na spodnji e-mail
naslov.

Skupinska razstava izbranih del bo na ogled v galerijskem prostoru Modre
hi?e v Ljubljani od marca do aprila 2010.

English:

After experiencing both extremely positive expert reviews as well as
absurd censorship intervention during an exhibition of a special selection
of works from Slavic cultures at the conference dedicated to taboos
?Tabuslav? in Poznan - Poland, we are hereby renewing this call to artists
from all cultures!

Taboos are so deeply rooted in all cultures, we often don?t even notice
them, nor do we question their purpose, even though they shape our
reality, our bodies, perception and behavior ? they affect our lives in a
multitude of ways. Artists are invited to use traditional handicraft
techniques with any choice of materials to explore, expose, question and
challenge sexual, dietary, national, religious, political and any other
old or new taboos.

Artworks can be two or three dimensional, made at least in some part by
using some traditional handicraft techniques such as crocheting, knitting,
embroidery, felting, lace-making, weaving, pottery, basketry and others,
or made by reclaiming / recycling existing handicraft products which form
a new artwork. Choice of materials is free, dimensions maximum 3 x 3
meters, maximum weight 50 kg.

Applications with photos (max 5 works per author) with their elaboration
of depicted taboo and detailed description of artwork - technique,
material, dimensions and weight should be sent to the e-mail below.

A selection of works will be presented in a collective exhibition at the
?Modra hisa? gallery space in Ljubljana ? Slovenia from March till April
of 2010.

International conference on governance models of independent cultural centres
MARIBOR, Slovenia 28/29/30 January 2010

NEW TIMES NEW MODELS is a conference that will look at the role
independent culture plays in the development of society, both on a global
and a local level. The conference will focus on inventive, dynamic and
sustainable models of governance of independent cultural centres and the
relationship between these and public authorities. Over three days, it
will provide a space for expert insights, for comparisons between Europe,
East and West, and for the sharing of best practice in the area of
cultural development. A core issue of New Times New Models is how
relations can be improved between public authorities, the private sector
and independent cultural centres. The conference will therefore explore
the obstacles to these relations: how coordinating legislation and other
policy challenges might be addressed; presenting and sharing knowledge on
good as well as bad practices and investigating innovative approaches.

CONFERENCE THEMES
An opening Key Note address by PHIL WOOD (Comedia): ?A NEW CREATIVE ECOLOGY?

Day 1: WHY INDEPENDENCE?

What does independence mean, what is it? What does it mean for society
(local community)? What are the responsibilities of both, public
authorities and non-profit actors? Why and how those two sectors
should/could collaborate and how to protect independence from compromise
in such relations? Why public support should be given to independent
groups/organisations etc.

Day 2: HOW INDEPENDENCE?

The conference will take advantage of the unique experiences other
countries and centres have to offer in shaping and solving the structural
issues arising from the status of being an independent cultural actor.
Review of governance models of independent cultural centres in the West
Balkans and in the EU should present succeding as well as missed
approaches to sustainable models of public-private cultural partnerships.

Day 3: NEW MODELS OF PRACTICE

Participants will have the opportunity to work together to examine how
policies and strategies can be formulated and implemented to establish
sustainable participatory models of governance, while maintaining
different kinds of independence of cultural centres.

The themes will be approached and presented through case-studies, speaker
presentations by experts and experienced practitioners, panel debates and
by working in smaller breakout groups in order to reach informed
conclusions, which will hopefully set guidelines for future models of
practice.

The association ArtistNe(s)t launches new activities dedicated to the
memory of Gabriela Tudor

The official launching of the Romanian Association ArtistNe(s)t, Network
of Artists-in-Residence Centres took place on 17 December in Bucarest. The
work plan for 2010 includes residency programmes in contemporary dance,
literature, visual arts and theatre. In addition, the Association
presented their new web page and an award dedicated to the memory of the
recently deceased Gabriela Tudor, founder of the programme together with
the Swiss Cultural Programme in Romania. The activities in 2010 are
supported by the Swiss Cultural Programme in partnership with the
following organizations: Arcus Cultural Center, George Apostu Cultural
Centre, European Cultural Center in Sinaia and National Museum G. Enescu,

Intre 14-17 ianuarie 2010, Asociatia Oberliht in colaborare cu Bauhaus- 
Universitat Weimar va deschide in orasul Weimar (Germania) un punct de  
informare cultural temporar, drept parte a proiectului CHIOSC (http://oberliht.org.md/chiosc.html 
), prin care se doreste a se oferi o vizibilitate mai mare  
organizatiilor si indivizilor care activeaza in domeniul culturii in  
Republica Moldova.

Aceasta actiune se inscrie in cadrul Expozitiei IMPORT-EXPORT. FROM  
MOLDOVA WITH LOVE  (http://www.markepunktsechs.de) organizata in urma  
realizarii proiectului Synapses (http://www.project-synapses.eu)  
initiat de studenti si absolventi ai Universitatii Bauhaus din Weimar  
la Chisinau si care a vizat reactivarea cladirii fostului Circ de stat  
in lunile august-septembrie 2008.

Pe aceasta cale dorim sa va invitam sa depuneti la ARThotel (sediul

Between 14-17 of January 2010, Oberliht Association in partnership  
with Bauhaus-Universitat Weimar will open in Weimar (Germany) a  
temporary cultural info-point, as part of CHIOSC project (http://oberliht.org.md/chiosc.html 
), through which we would like to give greater visibility to  
organizations and individual artists that are active in the cultural  
domain in Republic of Moldova.

This action is inscribed in IMPORT-EXPORT. FROM MOLDOVA WITH LOVE  
exhibition (http://www.markepunktsechs.de) organized as part of  
Synapses project (http://www.project-synapses.eu) that was initiated  
by a group of students and graduates of Bauhaus-Universitat Weimar  
aiming to revitalize the former circus building in Chisinau, Republic  
of Moldova in August and September 2008.

We invite you to bring to ARThotel (where Oberliht Association is  
currently based: http://oberliht.org.md/arthotel/?page_id=18)  
different materials that communicate about the activities of your  
organization, or about your personal art projects (catalogues,
